My Village Library

Our Mission is to Excite! Prepare! Empower! and Release! Life Long Learners.

About Us

My Village Library is a nonprofit mentoring program dedicated to supporting the educational, developmental, and emotional growth of students in our community. We provide a welcoming environment where students receive individualized academic assistance from dedicated staff and volunteers. Our GOAL is to encourage and support at-risk students and their families in the Hurst-Euless Bedford ISD to succeed academically through our mentoring program.

Originally founded as part of Mission Central in 2003, our program was relaunched in April 2024 after Mission Central closed its doors. Thanks to the commitment of community leaders and the Mid-Cities Pacesetters Rotary Club, My Village Library was established as an independent nonprofit, ensuring this vital outreach continues.

Our Program

In partnership with HEB ISD, My Village Library offers an after-school mentoring program that provides:

  • Individualized tutoring and homework support

  • Mentoring and relationship building

  • Focus on academic improvement (especially in reading and math)

  • Social, emotional, and cognitive skill development

Students attend one-hour sessions weekly during the school year. Most of our students are recommended by school counselors and teachers and often speak a language other than English at home. Our instruction not only strengthens academic skills but also helps parents learn ways to better support their children’s education.

How We Track Progress

We monitor student growth through:

  • Grade tracking

  • Mentor evaluations

  • Observations during sessions

  • Regular communication with students and parents

Students typically show significant improvements in standardized test scores, academic engagement, and overall confidence.

Social and Emotional Benefits

After school mentoring programs contribute to the social and emotional development of students:

• Increased Engagement: Students involved in these programs often exhibit greater engagement in school activities and a stronger interest in learning.

• Improved Self-Esteem: Mentoring can boost the confidence, self-esteem and in school relationships, as they experience success and progress in their studies.

• Positive Behavior: There is a notable decrease in behavioral issues among students who regularly attend after school mentoring sessions, as they feel more supported and competent in their academic environment.

Support for Diverse Learners

After school mentorin programs are particularly beneficial for underserved students:

• Individualized Attention: These programs provide personalized instruction tailored to the unique language and academic needs, which is often not feasible in regular classroom settings.

• Language Support: Mentoring programs offer crucial language support, helping students overcome language barriers that my exist in their homes and succeed academically.

• Cultural Sensitivity: Mentors often employ culturally sensitive approaches that respect and incorporate the students’ backgrounds, making learning more relevant and effective.

• Building relationships: Students build relationships that give them positive self-esteem and self-worth.

Parental and Community Involvement

We believe in the power of community collaboration. Some of our valued partnerships include:

  • TCU School of Nursing: Nursing students volunteer with us every semester, mentoring students, assisting with clerical work, and hosting a Physical Activity Day to promote healthy habits.

  • Aces in Action: Offers free tennis lessons, equipment, and a month-end pizza party for students eager to learn new skills outdoors.

  • First United Methodist Church of Hurst: Generously provides space for our mentoring sessions and has allowed us to remodel their Scout Hut into our dedicated space “The Village Hub.

These partnerships enhance our program and provide students with additional enrichment opportunities.

Why Our Work Matters

Afterschool mentoring programs like ours play a critical role in:

  • Improving academic performance, especially in reading and math

  • Enhancing students’ social and emotional development

  • Increasing parent engagement, particularly among families where English is not the first language

  • Building self-esteem and positive behavior in school and daily life

By helping students succeed academically, we also help them participate more fully in school activities like sports, band, and academic clubs.
